Eligibility Routes for ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientists

For you to be eligible for this examination category AS a US or international candidate, you must satisfy at least one of the following requirements.

MLS (ASCP), US Requirements

  • Route 1: You must have completed a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university or college and a NAACLS-accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist program within the last five years.
  • Route 2: You must hold a valid MLT(ASCP) certification and a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with two years of full-time clinical experience in the core ASCP MLS courses within the last five years.
  • Route 3: The previous route 3, which requires having a valid CLA (ASCP) certification, has been discontinued since early last year.
  • Route 4: You must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with 16 semester hours in biology and chemistry and have up to five years of full-time acceptable clinical experience in the core ASCP MLS courses within the last ten years.
  • Route 5: You must hold a valid MLS(ASCPi) certification and a transcript evaluation verifying equivalency to a U.S. baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Also, you must have up to five years of full-time clinical experience in the core MLS content area.
  • Route 6: You must have completed a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course within the last ten years and a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with full-time clinical experience in within the last ten years.

Requirements for International Candidates, MLS (ASCPi)

Route 1: Must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited educational institution in Medical Laboratory Science, biological science, or chemistry and completed a Medical Laboratory Science training program.

Route 2: Must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited educational institution in Medical Laboratory Science and possess three years of acceptable clinical experience in an adequate laboratory.

Route 3: Must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited educational institution anda two-year Medical Laboratory Science program.

Route 4: Must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited educational institution in biological science or chemistry and also five years of acceptable clinical experience in an adequate laboratory.

Route 5: Must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited educational institution, a two-year diploma from an accredited academic institution in biological science or chemistry, and clinical experience in an adequate laboratory.

 

Preparing for the MLS ASCP Exam

MLS ASCP Exam Application Process

Applying for your MLS ASCP certification is over and easy.

Apply For the Exam: Click on the “Apply Now” on your ASCP page to kick off your application.

Select your category and route.

Update Your Information: Make sure all the information you provide is correct and up to date.

Any discrepancy could lead to delay or cancellation of your application. 

Complete the Application: To complete your application, submit all the necessary documents and transcripts.

Ensure that they’re uploaded in PDF format. Remember, your payment is what finalizes your application.

So make sure to submit your application fee as well.

The MLS ASCP Certification comes with a non-refundable application fee of $90-210.

Monitor Your Application Status: Although ASCP BOC sends email notifications to applicants confirming the change in application status, you can equally monitor your application status by logging into your ASCP account dashboard.

Schedule Your Exam: After you’ve received an email notification, you can go ahead and schedule your examination at Pearson VUE.

Also, ensure that you fix your exam with Pearson Vue within the eligibility window in your admission notification.

What To Expect On Your Exam Day

While you’re free to choose a Pearson Vue center, you must report to the testing center not less than 30 minutes before your exam time.

Failure to do so could lead to rescheduling of the exam. Of course, rescheduling your MLS ASCP exam could cost you a little extra.

Also, come to the exam venue with a valid means of Identification showing your name and signature.

It could be a National ID, Passport, Resident Card, or Drivers License.

You’ll be required to present any of these during your check-in.

Kindly note that the following are not allowed into the testing centre,

  • Cell phone
  • Study material
  • Smartwatch
  • Fitness band
  • Weapons

Before the exam starts, you’ll be required to keep all personal belongings in storage lockers.

 

What After the MLS ASCP Exam?

Immediately after your exam, you’ll receive the initial “pass” or “fail” result.

A few days down the line, ASCP BOC will send your official score report to your email.

If you pass the certification exam, verify your mailing address and wait for your wall certificate.

Your wall certificate is valid for only three years.

It will arrive in a few weeks after your score report.

 

And If You Fail?

Wait till the exam report is out before applying for a retake.

Do note that you pay a fresh fee upon new application.

But you don’t need to resubmit for documentation.

Also, apply up to five times under the same eligibility route.

However, after five failed attempts, you must go for an alternative route.

 

Maintaining & Renewing Your MLS ASCP Certification

The ASCP designed a Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) for all ASCP-certified professionals who wish to maintain their credentials.

You must complete the CMP every three years in other to maintain your credentials.

To complete your CMP

  • Log in to your ASCP account
  • Go to “My Education,” “Check Progress” and view your ASCP certificate end date.
  • Allocate ASCP credits and submit your CMP declaration to the BOC for review.

At the end of your program, you’ll get a three-year renewal notification for your credential.

Note that you should start your CMP at least a month before the expiration of your current credential.

Also, keep all your support documentation. CMP certification comes with a non-refundable application fee of $95.
