Eligibility Criteria for ASCP Cytology Certification

The following are eligibility routes for HT ASCP/ASCPi and HTL ASCP/ASCPi:

Eligibility Route for Histotechnician

U.S. HT ASCP

• Route 1: Within the last 5 years, NAACLS-approved histotechnician program.
• Route 2:  Academic credit of 60 semester hrs with the combination of 12-semester hrs in biology and chemistry Or an associate degree with a combination of 12-semester hrs in chemistry and biology. And clinical experience of 1 year in a histopathology lab Or 1 year of industry, veterinary, or research experience in a histopathology lab Or histology two-part structured program (minimum of 9 months); and at least 480 hours of clinical experience in a histopathology laboratory.
• Route 3:  An associate degree with a combination of 12-semester hrs in chemistry and biology and academic credit of 60-semester hrs with the combination of 12-semester hrs in biology and chemistry.

International HT ASCPi

• Route 1: Histotechnician clinical training program & internship (this program and internship must be completed after high school completion), and high school completion or equivalent.
• Route 2: 2 years of diploma & 1 year of histopathology laboratory clinical experience, Or 1 year of research, industry, veterinary experience in a histopathology laboratory.

Eligibility Requirements for Histotechnologists

U.S. HTL ASCP

• Route 1: NAACLS-approved Histotechnologist or Histotechnician program and baccalaureate degree  with a combination of 30-semester hrs in chemistry and biology (with credits hrs in both)
• Route 2: Chemistry or biological science baccalaureate degree or bachelor’s degree in biology or chemistry with the combination of 30 semester hrs, and histopathology laboratory 1 year of clinical experience Or histopathology laboratory research, veterinary, industry experience Or histology two-part structured program of minimum nine years Or 1 year of research, industry, or veterinary experience in histopathology lab Or two-part structured histology program with a minimum of 9 months and 480 hrs of histopathology laboratory clinical experience.
• Route 3: Histopathology laboratory clinical experience of six months Or research, veterinary, or industry experience in histopathology laboratory, ASCP HT certification, and a baccalaureate degree.
• Route 4: baccalaureate degree in biology and chemistry with a combination of 30 semester hours and a 50-week histotechnician training course offered by the U.S. military.

International HTL ASCPi

• Route 1: Histotechnologist or Histotechnician clinical training program, bachelor’s degree with a 30 semester hours combination in chemistry and biology.
• Route 2: Veterinary, research, industry experience in a histopathology lab or clinical experience in a histopathology lab of 1 year, and baccalaureate degree in biological science or chemistry, or with a combination of 30 semester hours baccalaureate degree in biology or chemistry.
• Route 3: HT ASCP/ASCPi credential, a baccalaureate degree, histopathology lab clinical experience of 6 months Or research, veterinary, industry experience of six months in a histopathology laboratory.

Lab Experience For Both HT/HTL ASCP/ASCPi

With one route requirement, you have to get lab experience in all of the following areas:

Fixation

• Reagents
• Tissue Identification
• Parameters (e.g., time, pH, temperature)
• Troubleshooting or problem-solving of fixation artifacts

Processing

• Use, preparation, and selection of decalcification reagents
• Appropriate processing method selection
• Tissue processor maintenance & operation

Microtomoy/Embedding

• Microtomy
• An embedding center maintenance and operation
• Orientation for embedding and tissue identification
• Operation & maintenance of a  water bath & cryostat/microtome

Staining

• Reagent preparation
• Routine staining
• Coverslipping & mounting procedures
• Selection of control material
• Special staining (e.g., connective tissue, carbohydrates,  pigments & minerals, microorganisms, amyloid)
• Routine staining
• Tissue structure identification and staining characteristics

Lab Operation

• Quality control

How to pass the ASCP Histology Exam Effectively?

ASCP Cytology Exam Registration and Fee

To apply for the HT/HTL ASCP exam, you must follow the below instructions:

• First, you should determine your certification category, HT/HTL ASCP or HT/HTL ASCPi, and satisfy at least one route requirement.
• If you do not have an account on the ASCP official website, make sure to create one, but if you already have an account,  login to open it.

After the ASCP Histology Exam: What’s Next?

After the ASCP histology exam, there are two conditions that you may face: Pass the Exam or Fail The Exam.

Pass the Exam

Luckily, if you have passed the HT/HTL ASCP exam, you will get your score report within four business days.

Be conscious of getting the score report because you are not considered ASCP-certified without it

Within four business days after passing the exam, you will receive an email notification to login to review your score report.

This score report consists of your certification expiration date and your earning score.

Your ASCP histology certification is only valid for three years.

To update your certification, you have to participate in the CMP (Credential Maintenance Program).
