Eligibility Criteria for CT (ASCP) Technologist in Cytology

For CT ASCP

The ASCP BOC determines one route for U.S. candidates

• • Route 1:  Cytotechnology program approved by the CAAHEP that must be obtained within the last 5 years and a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject.

For CT ASCPi

The board fixes 4 routes for international candidates and meeting one route criteria is vital to applying for it.

• • Route One: Cytotechnology clinical training program (including internship) and a baccalaureate degree from an approved institution.

• • Route Two: Clinical experience (three years) and baccalaureate degree in a related subject.

• • Route Three:  CT (IAC) certification and baccalaureate degree

• • Route Four: 2 years of clinical experience,  baccalaureate degree, and  CTgyn (ASCPi) certification.

• • Laboratory Experience: You must have lab experience in laboratory operations, FNS (Fine needle aspiration), gynecological cytology, and non-gynecological cytology.

Eligibility Criteria for SCT(ASCP) Specialist in Cytology

For ASCP cytology specialists, the board determines 3 routes for U.S. specialists and two routes for international specialists.

US SCT ASCP

• • Route One: CT (ASCP) certification, a baccalaureate degree, and cytology clinical experience of three years.

• • Route Two: 3 years of cytology clinical experience as an academic educator, CT (ASCP) certification, and baccalaureate degree.

• • Route Three:  Master’s level CAAHEP-approved cytology program and master’s degree.

International SCT ASCPi

• • Route One: CT (ASCPi) certification, cytology clinical experience of three years, & a baccalaureate degree.

• • Route Two: As an academic educator 3 years of cytology clinical experience, CT (ASCP) certification, and a baccalaureate degree. 

How to Pass the ASCP Cytology Exam Effectively?

ASCP Cytology Exam Application Process and Fees

To apply for the ASCP cytology technologist certificates, you have to pay $250 as a U.S. applicant and $210 as an international applicant.

But, if you want to apply for ASCP cytology specialist certificates, you have to submit $300 as a U.S. cytology specialist and $250 as an international cytology specialist.

The following is the application process for ASCP cytology certification:

• • You should first choose your certification category among all ASCP cytology certifications; CT ASCP, CT ASCPi, SCT ASCP, or SCT ASCPi.

• • Select one specific route that meets your eligibility requirements.

After the ASCP Cytology Exam: What Next?

Your pass/fail result promptly pops up on your computer screen after completing your exam.

But the score report will be available in 4 business days.

If you pass the exam, your score report displays your total score out of 999 and certification expiration date.

Your ASCP cytology certification is only valid for 3 years.

After this period, you have to take part in the ASCP certification renewal process which is also called the Credential Maintenance Program to update your credential for the next three years.

For ASCP cytology certification, you need to earn 36 CMP points during your active three years.

Make sure to send the declaration at least three months before of your certification expiration date so that you can get time to review the process.

But, if you fail the exam, your score report describes your score in all exam content areas so that you may determine where you need to insert your extra attention.

You can sit for the retake exam after 3 months of your first attempt.
